News @ Jains - Jain Irrigation Bags Rs. 651 Million order of Balh Valley Irrigation Project

Highlights :

  • Order Value Rs. 651.1 Mn
  • Unique Project with water saving potential of 40%
  • 3000 farmers to benefit from project

Mumbai May 20, 2009 : India’s biggest micro irrigation company and agriculture conglomerate has bagged order for prestigious Balh Valley Medium Irrigation Project in Himachal Pradesh. The department of Irrigation and Public Health has selected the company through Global Competitive Bidding. This integrated project involves survey, investigation, planning, designing, supply and execution. The project is a part of Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) in Balh Valley, Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. The total value of the project is Rs 651.1 Million.

The unique Balh valley project would be a major breakthrough in adoption of Modern irrigation network/systems in the command areas. This project was originally a traditional canal command project which was redesigned into Micro Irrigation based Pressurized Water Distribution Network Systems (MIPWDNS) project by Jain Irrigation. Under this integrated and path breaking project, water is to be brought to the fields from off take point of BBMB main canal using modern irrigation network/methods and then irrigate more than 3000 farmers’ fields with micro irrigation systems.

Central Board of Irrigation and Power has estimated that the total irrigation potential created in the state till the end of X plan was 186.54 Thou Ha and the irrigation potential utilized was 155.26 Thou Ha. Thus there is a lag of about 31.28 Thou Ha. This is mainly due to age old practices followed in canal command areas and extremely poor water use efficiencies of traditional irrigation networks/methods. It is envisaged that the MIPWDNS would save up to 40% water and would thus help in reducing the lag between the potential created and utilized.
